When the garbage disposal is clogged, overheating, or if there’s a general problem that’s causing it to malfunction, the disposal may shut down and need to be reset. Luckily, resetting the garbage disposal is a breezy process.

Step 1: Make sure the disposal is turned off.

Step 2: Find and press the reset button. The reset button is typically red, and it can be found on the underside of your disposal. In some cases, using a mirror to reflect the exact location of the button will make the search easier. When the overload protector has tripped, the reset button will jut out about a quarter of an inch.

Step 3: Once that button has been pressed, turn the water cold and turn on the garbage disposal switch. As long as there’s nothing obstructing the disposal, it will function perfectly.

What to do if the Disposal Still Won’t Work?

If you’ve followed the above steps, and the reset button won’t return to its normal position, something is wrong. Unless you’re comfortable working the garbage disposal yourself, we recommend hiring an actual plumber to fix the issue.
