Lea sinWater damage that’s left unchecked will wreak untold havoc unto your home, and can potentially cost you a small fortune to fix. We recommend you do everything possible to identify and fix leaks before they cause your home harm. As a San Clemente sewer inspection and plumbing company, we know how to quickly find these leaks. We’ve compiled a few tips for you today.

Check the toilets. When toilets leak, your water usage through the roof. Inspect your toilets by first removing the lid. Listen intently for a hissing sound. If there’s no hissing sound, place some red food coloring in the tank (you’ll only need a few drops). After a few minutes, check the bowl. If the bowl water is a pinkish color, there is a leak.

Check the meter line. Before you check the meter, locate the shut-off valve in the home. Turn it off and check the meter’s leak dial. If it’s moving, chances are high that you have a leak, and it’s likely the leak is somewhere between the meter and your house (possibly from a valve). Walk to the house and check the ground for any soft or muddy areas (this is where the valve may be leaking).

Look for wet discolorations on the ceilings. If there are any abnormal stains, there’s a high likelihood of a leak. Just be aware that the stain may not be where the leak originates from, and you may still need to find the actual location of the leak.
